A.S.D. Margherita Sport e Vita end of the year…

The end of school year has also brought to an end the first year of the PLAY! pilot. Italian partner A.S.D. Margherita Sport e Vita has concluded the year with a successful event on 6 May, where Youth Active Groups (YAGs) and beneficiaries came together to celebrate achievements.

At the event, held in Trinitapoli, 20 youth out of 150 that participated in the programme joined the demonstration session. There were also the 10 YAGs were involved in the project, who throughout January until April ran sessions that combine the use of basketball and music. “Play with music” is a well-established socio-educational model to further learning motivation, intellectual, social and personal development of children.

The event was also used to highlight the involvement the 10 basketball clubs and associations in it, including: ASD Atletica Andria, Frassati Basket San Giovanni Rotondo, Udas Cerignola, Basket Trinitapoli, Fortitudo Trani, ASD Canusium Basket, SSD Giuseppe ANGEL and ASD Fenice Basket Foggia, ASD Margherita Sport e Vita and UDAS Young Basket Cerignola.

FIMU trains 13 volunteers to become PLAY! sports tutors

Finnish Multicultural Sports Federation (FIMU) has recruited and trained 13 volunteers who will become sports tutors and help implement PLAY! sports sessions across the umbrella’s partner associations.

The training included theory on planning sports activities, tutoring best practices and information on the specifics of the PLAY! project. FIMU’s methodology is based on the use of physical activity to teach life skills – including respect for others, caring and self-motivation – transferable to other settings apart from sport, including school and the wider community.

Key to the method is the beneficiaries being aware of the skills they are supposed to acquire during the sessions, which are set at the beginning of the programme.

Beneficiaries are asked to reflect on their own attitudes and behaviours during the session. Group meetings are held at the end of the sessions to discuss the session itself, make suggestions, as well as comment on the group’s performance and cohesion.
